Public Safety

My Beliefs

The first and foremost responsibility of state government is to protect the public from those who would harm the innocent.

My Record

Human Trafficking: In 2010, I authored legislation to protect the victims in human trafficking, the world’s third largest crime.  With over 17,000 women being forced into the underground sex trade in the United States, Oklahoma is both a transit state and destination state for these women.  My legislation would close loopholes that their captors currently enjoy and would extend to these abused women the ability to more easily escape from their captors.

Death Penalty for Serial Child Molesters: I helped pass the bill to allow juries to sentence second time child molesters to death. These people murder the spirit of a child.  The ultimate punishment should be an option for these most heinous crimes.

Identity Theft: The very first bill I successfully passed was to protect people’s identity by changing our driver’s license numbers to an alphanumeric system in order to avoid the nine-digit number being mistaken or counterfeited as a social security number. I further have sponsored legislation to remove social security numbers from open records requests for municipal utilities and authored a bill to crack down on identity theft and credit card fraud.

Supporting Our Law Enforcement Officers: As an advocate for our Highway Patrol, Sheriffs, Deputies and our men and women in blue, I’ve sponsored legislation to allow them greater technology in their squad cars, the ability to better organize mutual in cases of tragedy and to give our officers greater powers to search for meth and other controlled dangerous substances.

Child Abuse/Pornography: To protect our most vulnerable citizens from abuse, I helped sponsor legislation to require computer repair technicians to report child pornography they may find on a computer being repaired to law enforcement.  I’ve sponsored legislation to require sex offenders to report their addresses with actual mappable addresses rather than a general area.  I’ve sponsored legislation to keep sex offenders away from our schools and upped the penalties for them moving into a sex-offender free zone.

DNA Collection From Violent Offenders: Criminals usually don’t get caught after committing their first crime.  Oftentimes, they get caught for a lesser offense than the most heinous offense they’ve committed.  I’ve sponsored legislation to required those arrested for violent crimes to submit a DNA sample upon arrest so we can finally solve many brutal rapes and murders that continue to plague families with no closure.
